"CANCHA-PAR - 15"
golf chipping game

chipping swing basics

To get started in your home, office , hotel, or  anywhere on a smooth carpet  or grass surface.

Alignment

Place the Cancha-par Target on a smooth carpet or grass surface. The Target should be aligned squarely with a center line that runs lengthwise through the center of the target, and extends to a point where you will chip your ball from, with the scoring area facing your ball.  Imagine an invisible line from the center of the target to your ball. Place your club face behind the ball and square to the invisible line.

The grip

Place your right hand on the club shaft square to the invisible line, (assuming you are right handed). Choke down on the grip leaving room for your left hand. Now place your left hand on the shaft with at least 1/2" protruding through the left hand grip. Your left forefinger will interlock with the right hand's little finger. The left thumb will be rotated  slightly to the right and fit along a diagonal line in the palm of the right hand, which  runs just below and some what parallel to the right thumb.  Close the right hand over the left thumb, with a very light grip in both hands.

Stance
Take a stance with your eyes directly over the ball, (same as in putting). Your left foot (assuming you are right handed), will be withdrawn slightly farther from the invisible line than the right foot.  The ball will be played off the toe of your right foot.

Posture
With the knees slightly bent and the upper body bent slightly forward from the hips, try to stay comfortably balanced leaving slightly more weight on your left foot and kneels. The left  arm should hang straight down from the shoulder and leaving you with a very light grip. The right arm should be relaxed and slightly bent, as the right shoulder should be slightly lower than the left.

The Take Away.

The take away is initiated by rotating the hips and shoulders slightly. This starts the arms, hands, and club head moving straight back parallel to the invisible line. The left thumb should be approximately parallel to the invisible line when you have taken a one half back swing. The average chipping swing should be somewhere between a one quarter and  one half of the full back swing. Your wrist starts braking sooner than when making a full swing, this allows your club head to become elevated a little sooner than with the full swing and your down swing will be more descending, striking the ball first, before the ball's supporting surface.

The down swing and hit through

A slight pause at the top of the approximately one quarter full swing will help you make a smooth transition to the down swing and through the ball. A smooth rotation of the right shoulder, (assuming a right handed player),  back to its original position will help transfer the weight to the left foot, (which is the pivot point during the swing through), and the leading arm will follow as it drops down and the hands and club face pass squarely through the ball.

Keep a light grip and your head behind the ball during the swing through.
